Pop/Rock Hits: CD-ROM Sheet Music Series

Pop/Rock Hits: CD-ROM Sheet Music Series
Customer Review: A really good idea for the developing player
This wasn’t quite what I expected - I thought it would be a book of sheet music with a CD - but actually all the music is on a CD ROM. There is a good range of tracks - ColdPlay, Michael Jackson, some fast ones, some ballads, and all the words are included. However, the really useful features are on the CD_Rom which offers you the chance to customise the music to the key and instruments (including voice) you require, to print out with the piano score. It also has an excellent feature where you can play the music and watch it on-screen - by adjusting the tempo you can carefully listen and follow exactly how to play that tricky bit in ‘Clocks’ (or whatever!) which is really helpful in improving your playing fluency. Knocked down to 4 stars as it says you can only print out one copy of each song without paying more. However, it is a small niggle - you get 75 songs for under ?10.00.

Sampler 2: Art, Pop and Contemporary Music Graphics

Sampler 2: Art, Pop and Contemporary Music Graphics
This reviewer angrily objected to the advent of CDs on the grounds that four square-inch cover art simply doesn’t do justice to the medium. This loving, lavish exploration of music graphics by London-based design practice Intro–who themselves design record covers and direct music videos–shows that perhaps this reviewer was a bit hasty.

The evolution of music graphics seems to have been galvanised, rather than hindered, by shrinking covers to a third of their former size and encasing them in jewelled plastic. Sampler2 leads you through the evolution of this specialisation, from typography to layout to printing techniques, and explores what designer Adrian Shaughnessy of Intro characterises as a search for authenticity that’s distinct from the instant gratification we often associate with conventional graphic design.

But mainly this book gives joy by inundating you with page after page of cover art, the graphics printed on the CDs themselves and the little extras–hand-written liner notes, translucent paper packaging and the like–we’ve grown to expect from the artistry of modern music. –Liz Bailey

Customer Review: Better than he thinks.
I think that the Intro books are superb…along with the two volumes of Blue Note cover art, the book on soundtrack cover art, and the one covering the blues, I think these are essential for anybody interested in the history & development of commercial graphic arts as applied to the music industry. Of course these books will cover contemporary releases, they’re put together by a contemporary design firm, after all. It doesn’t matter when these designs were made, some of them are still rather ingenious.

Customer Review: Covers a lot of good music related design
This book shows a good selection of graphics, which are mostley used in the music industry,But a lot of it you would have seen before if you buy current music. So i was a bit disapointed by this, But it is a really good book to have if you want to discover whats out and about at the moment in the wonderfull world of music packaging.

Jolly Herring: 77 Songs Folk and Pop (Classroom Music)

Jolly Herring: 77 Songs Folk and Pop (Classroom Music)
Customer Review: WARNING - NO MUSIC IN THIS EDITION
I bought this book for someone who wanted to learn the songs in it. Unfortunately, it only contains the words. The other review for this book, I now realise, is for the spiral bound edition which contains the music, tabs etc., but this paperback edition doesn’t. I’m sure the words might be useful in a classroom environment, where the teacher has the master copy, but is of no use if you want to teach yourself the songs.

Sadly, the spiral bound version is no longer available. Please be careful not to assume, like I did, that this is a direct re-print. It isn’t!

Customer Review: Join the Herring Inn for a toast to folk and pop!
A fantastic anthology filled with your good old sea shanties, folk songs and pop memories with inspiring (and light-hearted) illustrations by Roy Bentley.
Join Mr. Herring, his wife and their customers, for an old sing-song around the piano: songs from ‘Right Said Fred’ and ‘Hole in the ground’ to ‘Football Crazy’, ‘Whiskey in the Jar’ and ‘The Drunken Sailor’…77 songs old and new.

Compiled, I think, for school children, I believe this to be an excellent and rewarding recourse for your upper-primary and lower secondary schools singing. Especially for your community groups!
A&C Black has certainly something to sing and dance about, isn’t that right Mr. Herring?
